While going to prison is never fun, some around the world are much worse than others due to their unsanitary or dangerous nature. Overview of the worst prisons in the world.

If there’s one place every human being wants to avoid, it’s prison. Regardless of the country, living conditions are rarely pleasant for the more than 11 million people incarcerated in prisons around the world, according to figures from the World Prison Brief . But in some countries, being behind bars can be a nightmare due to prison conditions. Overview of the worst prisons in the world.

Gitarama, Rwanda

Like all Rwandan prisons, Gitarama prison is not immune to overcrowding. 6000 inmates stay in this prison which has a capacity of 600 prisoners, which prevents them from being able to lie down or even sit down. Many diseases are circulating in the penitentiary center, which reportedly saw nearly a thousand inmates die between September 1994 and July 1995, according to Libération . Inmate excrement even covers the floor of this large brick building.

Diyarbakir, Türkiye

Located in southern Turkey, not far from the Syrian border, Diyarbakir prison is renowned for the physical and mental torture inflicted on inmates. Overcrowding is also a problem at this prison where inmates are often deprived of food and water. Conditions which would have pushed many prisoners to end their lives. In addition, many children are incarcerated in this prison which, according to some, was set up to destroy Kurdishness in the context of the Kurdish conflict.

Riker Island, United States

The largest prison in New York and the 2nd largest in the United States is renowned for its incredible violence. This island prison is home to some of America’s most dangerous criminals and is infamous for its cruel treatment of mentally ill inmates, who are often driven to suicide. Nicknamed the island of torture or the oven because of the stifling heat in the 3 x 3 meter cells, this prison has gained its reputation in particular because of negligence which led to the death of several inmates. Celebrities like Lil Wayne, Tupac, Dominique Strauss-Kahn and Harvey Weinstein have been incarcerated there.

Camp 22, North Korea

This prison, or concentration camp, is undoubtedly among the worst in the world. Around 50,000 prisoners, men, women and children, are incarcerated there and must work 7 days a week from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., then self-criticize and learn the dictatorship’s propaganda by heart. While information about this concentration camp is scant, some accounts indicate that inmates are subjected to extreme torture or episodes of human experimentation when the job is not done well. In addition to regular executions, an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 people die each year from malnutrition.

San Juan de Lurigancho, Peru

Although there are many things to discover in Peru, we do not recommend the San Juan de Lurigancho prison, located east of Lima. Built to house 3000 prisoners, it is overcrowded and contains between 7500 and 9000. Renowned for being the harshest prison in South America, it is however “special”: the prisoners run the prison in their own way and are free to commit murder or other acts of violence. Prisoners can only survive by providing for themselves, and therefore with the help of their families. A strict hierarchy operates within this prison: prisoners without money must work for the richest inmates, from laundry to sexual service. This prison therefore seems to be an ordeal for some, an El Dorado for others.

Bang Kwang, Thailand

Thailand’s Bang Kwang Prison is renowned for being the worst prison in the Far East. A bowl of rice or soup a day, overcrowding, lack of staff who do not fail to torture the prisoners, tiny cells… this is what the life of prisoners who are only sentenced to death or to long sentences is like .

Kamiti, Kenya

Prison conditions in Kenya are renowned for being among the worst in Africa and Kamiti prison is no exception. This prison has gained notoriety because of the misery in which prisoners have to live between overcrowding, malnutrition, unreliable water supply, rape, cholera. In February 2000, judges who visited the prison were shocked to find that some inmates were completely naked.

El Rodeo, Venezuela

This is the place where Venezuela’s biggest criminals are locked up. In this prison which accommodates 50,000 inmates crowded together, gang wars are very frequent. In 2011, a powerful war broke out, killing 25 people and requiring the help of the army to end it, which turned the prison into a real battlefield. More recently, detainees have reported that multiple situations of violence and physical assault have occurred in addition to the confiscation of food, clothing, hygiene products and phones.
